Brewing Up Learning with Salt Dough and Coffee Grounds

Playing with salt dough is one of the preschool class favorite classroom activities—and it’s so much more than just fun!

Students read the recipe, gathered the ingredients, and took turns measuring, pouring, and mixing until the dough came together just right. A big thank you to Hilton Head Coffee Roasters for donating the used coffee grounds that made this batch extra special!

The process of making and playing with salt dough strengthens fine motor skills, encourages teamwork, and builds early math and literacy foundations—all while providing a rich sensory experience. Whether they’re rolling, pinching, shaping, or imagining, our students are fully engaged in hands-on learning that nurtures both creativity and connection.

It’s moments like these that remind us: learning doesn’t necessarily look like sitting down with a book, paper, or pencil… Sometimes it smells like coffee, squishes like dough, and sounds like laughter around a mixing bowl.
