A Somber but Powerful Lesson: Learning from a Beached Whale

At The Island Academy, we believe the most impactful learning happens when students engage directly with the world around them. This past May, our students experienced one of those rare, unforgettable moments during a field trip to South Forest Beach—a moment that brought science, compassion, and curiosity together in an extraordinary way.

Our staff planned an emergency field trip to the beach after receiving news of a beached whale, an event both somber and scientifically significant. Guided by marine biologists on site, our students had the unique opportunity to observe part of a necropsy—a scientific examination performed to determine the cause of the whale’s stranding. The biologists explained their process, answered thoughtful student questions, and shared insight into whale biology, marine ecosystems, and conservation efforts.

What could have been a purely tragic event became a profound learning experience. Our students not only witnessed science in action, but also developed a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our oceans and the vital work of marine scientists.

This hands-on encounter sparked meaningful conversations back in the classroom and inspired a renewed sense of responsibility for ocean conservation. It was a powerful reminder that learning doesn't always come from textbooks—sometimes, it comes from the unexpected, real-world moments that open our hearts and minds.

Students were given the opportunity to ask the marine biologist questions.
